Community Service at The Women's Lunch Place
Members of the Rotary Club of Boston #7 participate in monthly service project at the Women's Lunch Place. Members of the club prepare and serve the day's lunch of delicious freshly cooked food.
The Women's Lunch Place was established in the 1980's by Jane Alexander and Eileen Reilly. They met in the 1980s while volunteering at the Pine Street Inn, an overnight shelter for men and women in Boston. Distraught by the overwhelming needs of the women they encountered, they dreamed of creating a place to offer these and other women with nutritious, home-cooked meals and a place to call home during the day. At the time, few resources existed specifically for this population. Homelessness was on the rise due to changes in the state's mental healthcare system.
The mission of the Women's Lunch Place is to provide a safe, comfortable daytime shelter, nutritious food, and services for women who are homeless or poor. We treat women with dignity and respect and foster a community committed to meeting each woman's needs. The Women's Lunch place serves approximately 150 women daily and is open six days a week Monday through Saturday from 7:00am - 2:00pm. A continental style breakfast is available from 8:00am - 10:00am, and lunch is served restaurant style at 12pm.
