Handling Gender-Neutral Pronouns with StyleJanika LeMaitre (she/her/hers): "Handling Gender-Neutral Pronouns with Style" We use pronouns to refer to a person without using their name. The most common pronouns, he/she, specifically refer to a person's gender. For queer, gender non-conforming, non-binary or transgender people these labels may not fit, causing stress and anxiety. Proper pronoun etiquette demonstrates your acceptance of persons displaying these characteristics. |

Boston Rotary #7 Government Series!Stephen McBride is running to be a new and bold advocate for Dorchester, Roxbury, South Boston, and the South End. At only 31, he has chosen to challenge a ten-year incumbent because the status quo is no longer working for his community. District 3 deserves accessible and accountable representation. Looking ahead is not enough - we must also reckon with the policies and institutions that have led us to where we are. There is an acceptance of the status quo from our current city councilor that has left too many of our neighbors and friends behind. Stephen is running on a platform that champions an equitable COVID-19 recovery; every child's access to a fully funded public school; and safe, stable, and affordable housing, while centering racial and climate justice at every turn. Stephen is running for office because he has a fundamentally different view of the changes our community needs than the person currently in this role. Stephen believes that the City Council should be here to push for structural change. And that's why he wants to be District 3's next city councilor.

Boston Rotary #7 COVID-19 responseTo My Fellow Rotarians, Friends and Supporters: As of March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic, stating that: WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction. We have therefore made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic. Here in the Commonwealth, Gov. Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency last Tuesday, March 11, 2020, as the number of coronavirus cases doubled in just 24 hours and rose to 92 cases. Leaders and the representatives of Massachusetts municipalities called for a coordinated and "cohesive" response to the coronavirus outbreak. As an active and responsible partner of the Boston community and most importantly in response to this pandemic, all club activities including service projects, committee meetings and other planned events will be postponed until further notice. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reminded everyone that, Several countries have demonstrated that this virus can be suppressed and controlled. The challenge for many countries who are now dealing with large clusters or community transmission is not whether they can do the same – it’s whether they will. Friends, we will do our part in promoting social distancing so all our meetings and activities are postponed for now. Rest assured that we are monitoring the situation from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the CDC, and we shall continue to keep you informed. In the meantime, stay safe and healthy. Yours truly, David Manzi President, Boston Rotary #7 |

Merrimack Valley Tragedy - Natural Gas ExplosionsI thought I would offer a community update. As you know through the news and Rotary District emails, many families in the area will remain impacted as we face a new week ahead. Red Cross shelters in North Andover and Lawrence are in place, and as many of you know, I'm a Red Cross board member and Disaster volunteer. I've been working the North Andover High School shelter for the last 2 evenings. You may be wondering how you can help our community members, some of whom are Rotarians. 1. Donate to the GoFundMe page provided in the District emails. (see link below) 2. Donate to the Red Cross. 3. Stay tuned to your email. In the next couple of days a district wide initiative will be announced whereby you can partake. 4. Thank you neighborhood First Responders, such as Police, Fire, and Emergency personnel, who came from near and far and have been responding to this incident 24 hours a day, just as the Red Cross has also. Should you know someone impacted and they are not sure what to do, encourage them to go to one of the shelters. Red Cross team members are getting first hand updates and will be able to help them with, food, shelter, information, medical care/how do I get my meds? etc... Reach out to me as well should you have questions. Yours in Rotary Lori Karas President, Rotary Club of Boston #7 First, I would like to express my thanks to all of you who have contacted the Clubs in the towns and cities involved, and to me, to offer assistance in this time of need. I have been in contact with all three Presidents of Andover, Lawrence and North Andover and want to assure you that they, at the moment, are doing everything in their power to provide service where needed. Both Brian Fraser, North Andover, and Marc Gillette, Andover, tell me that their Clubs have spent the last 48 hours running supplies to the shelters that have been set up in the three communities. Local assessments are still being made. The American Red Cross is firmly in place at the shelters, offering services, shuttle buses to folks that have not been able to get to their homes to get medications, check on the house, etc. Unfortunately, there are still many people that have not been allowed back.into their homes. I just wanted you to know that while the District is ready, willing and able to assist in any way, we must wait until the local needs assessments have been made, and wait until the three "boots on the ground" tell us how we can best help. I thank you for your patience. Please be assured I will let you know how we can be of service as soon as that comes to light. There is a GoFundMe page, started by Marc Gillette and it can be located at https://www.gofundme.com/ All proceeds will go to fire victims to help them either rebuild, refurnish or start a new life. I am thankful, though sad, that there was only one casuaty. Susan and I send our thoughts and prayers to those in need at this hour and patiently await direction from the folks that actually know what may be needed. Yours in Rotary, Bob Wood District Governor 2018-2019 Rotary District 7930 978-518-0752 |

Let's Cook and Serve Others! We invite you to sign up to participate in community service along with other volunteers and Boston Rotarians at The Women's Lunch Place. "A warm glow and sense of connection aren’t all you get from volunteering: It can improve your mental health and help you live longer too!" The Women's Lunch Place provides a safe, comfortable day time shelter, nutritious food, and services for women who are homeless or poor. They treat women with dignity and respect, and foster a community committed to meeting each woman's needs. Community SolarSolar costs have decreased by 80% since 2011 and, for the first time, solar can save ordinary households money on their electricity bills. Yet, 80% of Americans are effectively locked out of the solar market. These households include those who rent their homes, own a condo, have inadequate credit, or possess a non-optimal roof (e.g. a roof covered by a tree or facing the wrong way). The problem is especially severe among low-to-moderate income families, who disproportionately are unable to avail themselves of solar savings due to high credit minimums and long contract lengths required by solar financiers. Solstice’s mission is to put affordable solar within reach of every American. We do this by connecting households to solar farms in their neighborhood and by researching new financial inclusion mechanisms through the Department of Energy. With your help, we can democratize clean energy and accelerate the transition to clean energy. Our guest speaker, Steph Speirs, is a social entrepreneur and community builder with years of operational experience at d.light India, Acumen Fund, the White House National Security Council, and the Obama for America field campaign. "Let's buy the kids a new truck", urges Fair Foods founder, Nancy Jamison. Their old truck has hauled millions of pounds of food transferred from a larger truck. Without the small trucks, they could not deliver to as many places as they have. https://www.gofundme.com/ Surplus produce is grocery store quality fruits and vegetables that for various reasons never reaches the grocery store. A store may order more produce than it ends up needing, trucks may be too full to ship all of the ordered produce, or shipments can be delayed or arrive too early due to weather, market fluctuations, and equipment malfunctions. Often, entire pallets of usable food will be refused by markets because some items have slight cosmetic imperfections. The problem with surplus produce is that unlike canned goods, which could be resold or redistributed later, produce will spoil if it sits too long. Rather than letting good food go bad, our partners donate their surplus to us so we can distribute it the same day. Learn more about www.fairfoods.org |

Roy Balfour,"Imagine going home from the hospital and leaving behind your newborn child in the critical care ward."
The web cameras allow free access through a secure connection to parents, siblings, and extended family so they can view their newborn at any time and from anywhere. American military families have benefited and one uncle even dialed in from a Navy ship in the Persian Gulf to get to know his new nephew. When a Chinese mother gave birth to tiny twins, who were placed in the critical care unit, the web camera allowed her husband and family in China to see them.
“This Rotary service project is an example of a local effort with wide community support that has a global reach,” said Roy Balfour. He would like the Rotary Clubs in Suffolk County to get involved and expand this web cam project to five hospitals in Boston. “It’s important to recognize that when Rotary Clubs carefully select projects in which the community sees value, there’s a domino effect because people have a personal connection. It has been an amazing experience to watch how news of the special web cameras has spread. There are nine hospitals in Massachusetts with neonatal intensive care units; the other eight hospitals have heard about what Rotarians have done in Worcester and they want to install web cameras in their infant incubators. This is a project that touches people’s hearts. We followed a basic Rotary principle,” Balfour explained. “Do careful community assessment to identify a need that both the community and Rotarians see value in doing. Public relations then become a more natural process, through stories the community relates to and wants to support. It also generates a sense of Rotary pride that members like to share with others who see the impact value of becoming a Rotarian. What started as a single club project has evolved to include 12 clubs. The operative word is ‘engaging’ Rotarians in something that has a multi-community impact.”
“Hospitals are financially constrained and sometimes cannot ramp up projects like this as quickly as we would like. It’s amazing how the Rotarians stepped up to get club support and rally local business and philanthropic leaders to jump start the completion of our goal of providing a fantastic service to families . . . wherever they are.”, said Dr. Alan Picarillo, chief, Division of Neonatology Medical Director, NICU at UMass Memorial Medical Center, who initiated the UMass webcam program. Rotary's 6 Areas of Focus
~ Peace and conflict prevention/resolution ~ Disease prevention and treatment ~ Water and sanitation ~ Maternal and child health ~ Basic education and literacy ~ Economic and community development
Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation recognize these six areas of focus as organizational priorities, and there are countless ways that Rotarians can address these needs locally and internationally. Rotary clubs serve communities around the world, each with unique concerns and needs. Rotarians have continually adapted and improved the way they respond to those needs, taking on a broad range of service projects. The most successful and sustainable Rotary service tends to fall within one of these six areas.

Brandon Jellison - The Benefits of Massage
Brandon Jellison, Massage Therapist and president of Authentic Body, presented his personal journey and made a case for massage therapy as a means to promote health versus luxury. “Isn’t Massage a luxury?" On the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for another stress reliever. “ Mayo Clinic website. Brandon believe that the human body is fundamentally healthy and massage therapy can reduce and remove many causes of physical and emotional stress. He then suggests that with less mental stress and physical pain people are more likely to be kind and collaborative with others. In order to further leverage these positive effects of his efforts, he works with productive members of society and people in positions of power, hence an office on Nantucket island and on Boston’s Newbury Street. This naturally led to a discussion about common situations such as poor sleep habits or the effects of nutritional decisions. There was discussion about neck and shoulder tension as well as low back pain and how those situations can be skillfully relieved through what Brandon calls his Orthopedic Sports Massage. Additionally Brandon is happy to provide receipts for his personalized services which can then be submitted to HSA or insurance companies, but doesn’t accept any insurance. AuthenticBodyTherapy.com

Bruce Smith - Growing ROWING on the Charles River
Community Rowing has become an important component of positive social change in Boston. With 30% growth every year for the past four years, more people are healthier and connected through on-the-water activity than ever before.
Community Rowing, Inc.(CRI) is the largest rowing outreach organization in the world, introducing more than 5,000 rowers to the sport every year. As a coach, Bruce Smith has coached crews at five world championships, and the lightweight eight that he co-coached in 2009 won a silver medal in Poland. In addition to his duties as executive director, Smith has developed numerous new rowing communities around the United States, including two new boathouses in downtown Chicago
As the Executive Director of Community Rowing since 2008, Bruce has tripled operating income from $900,000 to more than $3 million dollars, increased participation across all programs by more than 100%, and created several innovative initiatives to transform CRI into the largest and most effective rowing club in the United States. In addition to programming increases, during the worst economic downturn in five generations, Bruce completed a capital campaign to raise $16 million for the Harry Parker Boathouse and closed the campaign in two years, a full year ahead of schedule. Bruce also founded the Institute for Rowing Leadership at Community Rowing (IRL@CRI), the country's first masters-level program designed to bring the sport of coaching to a new level of professional development. With more than 150,000 rowers in the United States, the sport needs well rounded coaches and leaders, and the IRL provides a year-long education program to develop that leadership. Bruce was named "Administrator of the Year" in 2010 by Rowing News Magazine.

Saritin Rizzuto - Casa Myrna
Saritin Rizzuto began a distinguished career in the non-profit sector over twenty years ago, when as a teen, she worked as a peer leader for the department of public health. Her goal was to go into communities with at –risk youth and educate them about violence prevention, substance abuse and teen pregnancy. Saritin found her path then, and has spent what seems like every waking moment “doing for others”.
She has worked in a variety of settings that reflect her passion and commitment to improving the lives of others- as a teen health educator, an advocate for the disabled, in support of AIDS advocacy and combating domestic violence. Saritin’s work has been as tireless as it has been compassionate, working both out in the community and in-house in program administration. Her broad interest, knowledge and effectiveness have benefited local, regional and national organizations and all the people they serve
Even now, working at Metro Credit Union as a Community Relations Manager, Saritin takes on the traditional role of her job as only she can, finding the time to incorporate community organizing and building partnerships to benefit low income and emerging populations.
Saritin’s many accomplishments have her in high demand as a leader and champion of other causes. She is a board member of Casa Myrna, North Suffolk Mental Health, The East Boston Social Center, The Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, Bunker Hill Community College Adult Education Advisory Board. She’s a Past President of the Chelsea Rotary Club and her most recent effort to organize Latino businesses to join and have a voice in the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce is proving highly successful.

Whether we’re talking about lowering your chances of illness, feeling more energetic, or simply getting a better night's sleep—enable yourself to feel great by making some simple and natural everyday choices that will dramatically improve your well-being. From what you are eating to how you are thinking, steps that will leave you feeling healthier, happier and empowered.Dr. Suneel Dhand is board-certified in internal medicine. He was born in London and grew up in Berkshire, England. Suneel went to medical school at Cardiff University and then moved across the pond, completing his internal medicine residency in Baltimore, Maryland. End Polio Now!
Thank you to all who supported our Polar Plunge! Polio cases have declined rapidly since 1985, but the fight isn't over. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, and for as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against the virus for life. If we don't finish the fight right now, more than 10 million children under the age of five could be paralyzed by polio in the next 40 years. Learn more at www.endpolio.org

Kevin Walsh, Comcast Sports Net Sportscaster
Kevin Walsh,Comcast Sports Net Sportscaster and friend of the Rotary Club of Boston #7 spoke to the club about his new book The Perfect Catch.
According to the description of Walsh’s latest on Amazon, here’s what you’re in for: “What does it mean to be a good brother, a good son and a good father? The Perfect Catch should be mandatory reading for anyone searching for those answers. It’s not just a book for men, it’s a book for mankind. It’s about breaking through male pattern insecurity and awkwardness and forming lasting bonds that actually come quite naturally to the women in our lives. Mixed in is some really good fly fishing and travel involving three adult brothers and elderly father. And just like the steelhead trout which are returning to the same river to spawn, the Walshes are returning to their roots as a family, as men, and for what could be their last time. In the end, 73-year-old Bob Walsh catches the fish of a lifetime; the greater takeaway is the admission of past failures, the casting away of old grudges and reeling in of new opportunities to bond with ties as thick as blood. That’s what makes Kevin Walsh’s thrilling new book The Perfect Catch.”
Sarah Maisonneuve, Founder of Wildlife Connection
Sarah Maisonneuve, Founder Wildlife Connection spoke on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at the Rotary Club of Boston #7.
The Mission of the Wildlife Connection is to simultaneously improve human livelihoods and promote the conservation of natural resources, particularly of elephants. They aim to do this by both reducing the costs and increasing the benefits to local people of living nearby elephants.Elephants are the largest land animals on earth, and have a long and complicated history of co-existing with humans. They are known and admired by many of us for the deep social bonds they share with one another, their long memories, and their extraordinary intelligence. To others, their value is measured by the almost insatiable market demand for their ivory. For most rural Africans who share the landscape with them, elephants are known above all to be extremely dangerous and destructive, where they are a notorious threat to people’s lives, and livelihoods. PhD Candidate Sarah Maisonneuve will share her experience during the past 5 years working with local communities in rural Tanzania, who struggle to coexist with elephants. You will learn about the drivers and consequences of human elephant conflict in East Africa. You will also learn about some of the novel approaches being tested to mitigate this conflict, designed to simultaneously improve human livelihoods and protect elephants.
