Francisco Barrera (Frank) recently finished medical school and is currently studying for a master’s degree in Epidemiology at Harvard’s “T.H. Chan" School of Public Health. His full tuition was covered with a Rotary Scholarship Global Grant.

In August 2016, Dr. Mitra and his wife Sheema established a foundation named JOYGURU HUMANITARIAN SERVICES. This is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to serving the disadvantaged and underprivileged members of our community.

JOYGURU HUMANITARIAN SERVICES aims to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by poverty, homelessness, and other social conditions as well as blindness and visual impairment. The New England Center and Home for Veterans (NECHV) is a not-for-profit, community-based support organization dedicated to serving challenged Veterans of all eras.

Special guest speaker, Lauren Baker, and Veterans Service Dog Project. District 7930 awarded a service dog to a former combat United States Marine who was injured. The Boston 7 club has donated $1,000 toward the service dog's training for this hero.

To launch her book, To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis​, Andra is the first living person to walk the 444-mile Natchez Trace as the pioneers did. Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee. Fifteen miles a day. Six days a week. She finished her trek in 34 days. While she walked the Trace to launch her novel, she ended up having a life-changing adventure with her 80-year-old father.

Andra is a Past President of the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is District Communications Chair for District 7770-Eastern South Carolina, a two-time Rotarian of the Year, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a Paul Harris Society member and recipient of her District’s Distinguished Service Award.

On a wintry Saturday morning, our new club member, Shiela Lally, Dean of Students at Fisher College, participated in the Polar Plunge in Gloucester to raise funds to End Polio Now. Brandon Jellison, Massage Therapist and president of Authentic Body, presented his personal journey and made a case for massage therapy as a means to promote health versus luxury. “Isn’t Massage a luxury?" On the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for another stress reliever. “ Mayo Clinic website. Brandon believe that the human body is fundamentally healthy and massage therapy can reduce and remove many causes of physical and emotional stress. He then suggests that with less mental stress and physical pain people are more likely to be kind and collaborative with others. In order to further leverage these positive effects of his efforts, he works with productive members of society and people in positions of power, hence an office on Nantucket island and on Boston’s Newbury Street. This naturally led to a discussion about common situations such as poor sleep habits or the effects of nutritional decisions. There was discussion about neck and shoulder tension as well as low back pain and how those situations can be skillfully relieved through what Brandon calls his Orthopedic Sports Massage. Community Rowing has become an important component of positive social change in Boston. With 30% growth every year for the past four years, more people are healthier and connected through on-the-water activity than ever before.

Community Rowing, Inc.(CRI)  is the largest rowing outreach organization in the world, introducing more than 5,000 rowers to the sport every year. As a coach, Bruce Smith has coached crews at five world championships, and the lightweight eight that he co-coached in 2009 won a silver medal in Poland. In addition to his duties as executive director, Smith has developed numerous new rowing communities around the United States, including two new boathouses in downtown Chicago​

As the Executive Director of Community Rowing since 2008, Bruce has tripled operating income from $900,000 to more than $3 million dollars, increased participation across all programs by more than 100%, and created several innovative initiatives to transform CRI into the largest and most effective rowing club in the United States. In addition to programming increases, during the worst economic downturn in five generations, Bruce completed a capital campaign to raise $16 million for the Harry Parker Boathouse and closed the campaign in two years, a full year ahead of schedule. Bruce also founded the Institute for Rowing Leadership at Community Rowing (IRL@CRI), the country's first masters-level program designed to bring the sport of coaching to a new level of professional development. With more than 150,000 rowers in the United States, the sport needs well rounded coaches and leaders, and the IRL provides a year-long education program to develop that leadership. Bruce was named "Administrator of the Year" in 2010 by Rowing News Magazine.

Michael Richards is the Founder and Executive Director of Science Camps of America (A Non-Profit organization). This first ever educational Science Camp is located in Hawaii. Science Camps of America was founded to provide teens with the opportunity to immerse themselves in fun, hands-on science education in a summer-camp setting and at the same time enrich them with educational experiences not found in the traditional classroom setting, allowing students to become more active in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. Science Camps of America also provides scholarships and financial aid for young adults in their communities.

High School students explore the volcanoes, rocks, forests, ocean and skies of the Big Island of Hawaii. In what has been called "nature's greatest laboratory", they see science come to life as they experience geology, oceanography, ecology, climate, and astronomy, "up close and personal". Practicing scientists will share their stories and show them the latest gear they use to further their work. They gain an understanding of our world that will surely have a life-long affect.

Jeffrey Doretti​ is the Sr. Director of Operations at the Cambridge Institute of International Education. The organization has partnerships with over 200 private and public schools in 40 states creating strong international programs and bringing diverse groups of students to high schools in the United States. The goal of The Cambridge Institute is to increase the international profile of American educational institutions and to promote cultural exchange by cultivating relationships among youth in countries with mature, burgeoning, and rapidly changing economies. In the past 15 months the business tripled its operations and grew staff five times over. Now supporting 10 global offices, the Cambridge Institute of International Education, and their sister companies, offer domestic home stay, academic support, tutoring, college counseling, international school partnerships, short term exchanges, summer camps and capital improvement fundraising.

Mr. Doretti has focused on strengthening operations for educational outfits and brought new services to the global marketplace for the past 25 years. Previously, Jeff worked at Road Scholar,  Child Care Management Design & Training Specialists, Action For Boston Community Development, Inc. He is a graduate of Boston College and received his Masters in Education from Cabrini College in Pennsylvania.

For the past 11 years, Jeff and his Partner have lived on their boat in Boston Harbor. As small business owners managing their Imagine Charter Company and local real estate, they have been able to raise $20,000 through fundraising for Boston service organizations. Jeff has a love for the ocean and the Boston Harbor islands. He has been a Big Brother for 21+ years. Jeff currently serves the Rotary Club of Boston #7 as Vice President and International Service Chair.

Some people think running against a longtime incumbent is a daunting task. Not Dave D’Arcangelo. He’s faced the kinds of challenges that put it in perspective. Diagnosed with a rare eye disease called Retinoschisis that left him legally blind at a young age, Dave has been twice elected Councilor at-Large in the City of Malden, and built successful careers in both the public and private sector over the past two decades. Now he wants to use this unique combination of experience to serve as Secretary of State and bring a much-needed, fresh perspective to state government. 

Dave’s public sector experience includes working in the Administrations of three Governors and in the State Legislature, as well as serving on the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind Rehabilitation Council for two terms under both Governors Mitt Romney and Deval Patrick. Outside of government, Dave founded and serves as Managing Director of Arc Angel Communications, a public relations and social media firm. Prior to that, Dave was the Chief Communications Officer for M & L Transit Systems, Inc. and the Regional Development Manager for CSI Support & Development Services. 

Dave has served in many other charitable and volunteer leadership positions, including Past President of the Malden Rotary Club, Member of the Suffolk University Communications and Journalism Alumni Board, Member of the Malden Chamber of Commerce, Board of Arc of Middlesex East, Board of Tailored for Success and on the Braille Literacy Advisory Council. Dave has decades of experience with elections, a core responsibility of the Secretary of State’s Office, working and volunteering for dozens of campaigns and serving the City of Boston as an Election Officer, Warden, Clerk and Inspector. Dave, 43, lives in Malden with wife Lisa and his daughter. He is a 1996 graduate of Suffolk University, where he recently served as an adjunct faculty member in the Communications and Journalism Department.

Michael Duff, Senior Representative for Community Engagement with the American Cancer Society spoke to the Rotary Club of Boston #7 members on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Fisher College. 

 For more than 100 years, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Together with millions of our supporters worldwide, the American Cancer Society helps people stay well, helps people get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer.

Here in Massachusetts, ACS funds over 100 researchers at local hospitals, and runs two Hope Lodges locations, where patients can stay free of charge as they undergo treatment. American Cancer Society provides patient support programs, educational programs, and has a cancer information line available 24/7. The Women's Lunch Place provides a safe, comfortable daytime shelter, nutritious food, and services for women who are homeless or poor. They treat women with dignity and respect and foster a community committed to meeting each woman's needs. The Women's Lunch Place is open from Monday through Saturday from 7:00am until 2:00pm. At Millennium Pharmaceuticals, she learned the passionate discipline of delivering on target, on time and on budget--ranging from concurrent strategic alliances to enterprise discovery pipeline reports to drug development infrastructure initiatives. Ryn loves her adult family, helping through Rotary's "Service above Self", and noodles of any ethnicity.

Dr. Thomas M. McGovern, President of Fisher College and Rotary Club of Boston #7 member  will speak Wednesday on the topic of Higher Education.

Thomas M. McGovern, Ed.D. was appointed the eighth president of Fisher College in October 2007, following over three decades of educating Fisher students and spearheading the College's expansion into a baccalaureate institution through his oversight of the management program. During his tenure at Fisher College he has distinguished himself as an innovator and visionary leader, fueling Fisher's evolution into one of the fastest growing institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dr. McGovern's tenure as President is marked by a variety of successful leadership and professional achievements, including an increase in enrollment and retention, facility expansion, and the growth of degree offerings.

With his strong background in strategic planning, President McGovern is responsible for directing a college-wide strategic management team that boasted the largest enrollment in the school's history, as well as the addition of seven baccalaureate degrees. He is currently moving Fisher College toward its first master's degree offering. Furthermore, Dr. McGovern has demonstrated his commitment to, and concern for, the larger community beyond Fisher College while President. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Dr. McGovern has supported the launch of Fisher's Military to Management initiative that offers financial benefits and flexible degree options to veterans and active military personnel seeking higher education.He is also an advocate of the college's athletics program, and a strong supporter of Fisher alumni, encouraging engagement in the life of their alma mater.

Prior to his entry into the field of higher education, Dr. McGovern had established himself as a leader in the field of transportation management. As the former Governor's Representative (GR) for Highway Safety and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Governor's Highway Safety Bureau (GHSB), Dr. McGovern has extensive experience in research-based highway safety programs and administration. Capitalizing on his highway safety experience, he launched the Fisher College Transportation Safety Initiative. This initiative supports all standards and problem areas as identified by the National Traffic
Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), educating students and the community on the dangers of distracted driving and safe driving habits. Also rooted in his strong belief in and commitment to public safety, Dr. McGovern created the Center for Leadership and Public Service (CLPS) in 2007, a division of Fisher College that encourages and inspires students to pursue careers in public safety and criminal justice through real-life research projects and work experience.

With respect to his educational background, professional training, and academic expertise, Dr. McGovern holds a Bachelor of Science from Northeastern University's School of Management, a Master's in Public Administration from Suffolk University's Sawyer School of Management, and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Johnson and Wales University.

Most people interpret sustainability as a planetary issue. Author Michael Prager does too, but argues sustainability ought to be a top consideration for any decision, not only regarding the planet but oneself. Michael illustrates his contention with his own primary example of personal sustainability, having maintained a 155-pound loss for more than 20 years.

Rotary Club of Boston #7 member Peter Griffin spoke on the topic of Stress Free Moving. Eventually everybody moves...and some people more than others! Peter Griffin will share ideas on how to keep the stress levels down and choose a moving company that serves you best. You will get a better handle on the differences in services and hear some interesting stories he has collected during his 40 years in the moving industry. Peter Griffin, President of AST (Advanced Storage and Transportation, Inc.), is a Certified Moving Consultant in Massachusetts. He has served as Director of the Massachusetts Movers and Warehouseman’s Association and has an A+ score with the Better Business Bureau (no complaints ever filed). Saritin Rizzuto began a distinguished career in the non-profit sector over twenty years ago, when as a teen, she worked as a peer leader for the department of public health. Her goal was to go into communities with at –risk youth and educate them about violence prevention, substance abuse and teen pregnancy. Saritin found her path then, and has spent what seems like every waking  moment “doing for others”.

She has worked in a variety of settings that reflect her passion and commitment to improving the lives of others- as a teen health educator, an advocate for the disabled, in support of AIDS advocacy and combating domestic violence. Saritin’s work has been as tireless as it has been compassionate, working both out in the community and in-house in program administration. Her broad interest, knowledge and effectiveness have benefited local, regional and national organizations and all the people they serve

Even now, working at Metro Credit Union as a Community Relations Manager, Saritin takes on the traditional role of her job as only she can, finding the time to incorporate community organizing and building partnerships to benefit low income and emerging populations.

Saritin’s many accomplishments have her in high demand as a leader and champion of other causes. She is a board member of Casa Myrna, North Suffolk Mental Health, The East Boston Social Center, The Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, Bunker Hill Community College Adult Education Advisory Board. She’s a Past President of the Chelsea Rotary Club and her most recent effort to organize Latino businesses to join and have a voice in the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce is proving highly successful.

Sister Joyce Khoury SND will join us from the Notre Dame Education Center (NDEC) in South Boston.  NDEC is a premier adult education and workforce development agency.  Offering programs in  English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Distance Learning, High School Equivalency, Alternative High School Diploma and Citizenship, NDEC strives to “provide quality education and support services in a diverse caring community that empowers adult learners to realize their full potential.”

Jason Hartz spoke about "Creative Avoidance & Why We Spend Time Doing Other Things Instead Of Growing Our Business". "Winners take charge, they are pro-active, and they control their destiny. They don’t procrastinate."

He was born in London and grew up in Berkshire, England. Suneel went to medical school at Cardiff University and then moved across the pond, completing his internal medicine residency in Baltimore, Maryland. He currently lives in Boston, and practices as a hospital medicine physician. Suneel held a faculty position with the University of Massachusetts Medical School as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine, regularly teaching medical residents and students. He has authored numerous articles in clinical medicine that have been published in leading medical journals, covering a wide range of specialty areas. He has also authored chapters in the “5-Minute Clinical Consult” medical textbook. His other main area of interest is preventive medicine and wellness, and he is the author of two well-being books; High Percentage Wellness Steps, and the historical fiction book, Thomas Jefferson: Lessons from a Secret Buddha.

MARE’s Executive Director Lisa Funaro  and volunteer Paul Deletesky of the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange, Inc. spoke December 11, 2013.

The Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE), will speak on the need for adoptive families for children in state foster care. If you’ve seen Wednesday’s Child on WBZ-TV with Jack Williams, you’ve already seen some of MARE’s work. 

The Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) was founded in 1957 to bridge the gap between children in state foster care in need of adoption, and adults looking to adopt. MARE has found permanent families for over 6,000 children so far, and has been recognized as a leader in adoption recruitment and information. MARE’s Executive Director Lisa Funaro was honored as an “Angel in Adoption” in October 2013 by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute.

Dave Caruso, Financial Editor at WBZ News Radio spoke to the club about "Getting Organized: A talk on lifestyle, the psychology of money."

The BDL’s programming is unique among the city’s after-school programs in that it targets middle and high school students and blends competition and fun with rigorous academic work. Debate provides an engaging, educational opportunity that actively cultivates social and academic skills. The BDL presents debate in a variety of ways so as to reach a broad spectrum of students, from those already highly achieving to those who are off-track academically and at risk of dropping out.

This year, 20 schools are participating in the BDL and the league anticipates 750 debaters this year, with an average of 35 debaters per team – the largest average team size of all urban debate leagues in the nation.

Sarah Maisonneuve, Founder Wildlife Connection spoke on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at the Rotary Club of Boston #7.
The Mission of the Wildlife Connection is to simultaneously improve human livelihoods and promote the conservation of natural resources, particularly of elephants. They aim to do this by both reducing the costs and increasing the benefits to local people of living nearby elephants.Elephants are the largest land animals on earth, and have a long and complicated history of co-existing with humans. They are known and admired by many of us for the deep social bonds they share with one another, their long memories, and their extraordinary intelligence. To others, their value is measured by the almost insatiable market demand for their ivory. For most rural Africans who share the landscape with them, elephants are known above all to be extremely dangerous and destructive, where they are a notorious threat to people’s lives, and livelihoods. PhD Candidate Sarah Maisonneuve will share her experience during the past 5 years working with local communities in rural Tanzania, who struggle to coexist with elephants. You will learn about the drivers and consequences of human elephant conflict in East Africa. You will also learn about some of the novel approaches being tested to mitigate this conflict, designed to simultaneously improve human livelihoods and protect elephants. Rotarians from around New England enjoyed an exciting game between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers on September 4, 2013. It was a possible preview of the American League Championship Series which will determine who represents the AL in the World Series. There were discounted price on great seats and we rooted for our Red Sox during the final weeks of the season.

 At Wednesday's meeting new member Jose Sierra was inducted into the Rotary Club of  Boston #7. Jose moved to Massachusetts from New Jersey in 2007.  He joined Fish & Richardson P.C. as a Principal in the life sciences practice group. At Fish, Jose represents individuals and companies under investigation and handles intellectual property,whistleblower and commercial litigation matters. He was formerly employed as the Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer at Sepracor Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company in Marlborough, Ma.  In 2009, the Company was acquired by Dainippon Sumitomo, a Japanese pharmaceutical company and the Company was eventually renamed Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, Inc.  he left the Company in September 2010 when he joined Fish & Richardson P.C. International Service is such a fascinating topic.  As a Rotarian, in the 1.2 million member Rotary family, I am always amazed at what we can accomplish.  President Elect Ron is doing a marvelous job leading the way with this project.  It was also great to hear from Dr. Sue Crawford at IMEC about the process of gathering the supplies and preparing them for shipment.  Going to IMEC and volunteering to help prepare the shipment of supplies sounds like a great service project.   Who's In?

John Ferguson officially started as president of the Rotary Club of Boston #7 on July 1, 2013. John led his first official club meeting on Wednesday, July 10th and held his first board meeting Thursday, July 11th. We are looking forward to a phenomenal year under John’s leadership. John is pictured above with Immediate Past President Lucy Millan as she was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
